10 Steps to Healthy Eyes This Summer
It’s officially summer and it’s time to keep your eyes protected from the sun and other warm weather dangers.
Here are some tips to keep your eyes safe in the sun:
-
Buy glasses that offer proper UV protection. If your shades don’t offer 100% UV protection to protect your eyes from the dangers of UV exposure, they may be resulting in more harm than good. It’s important to keep in mind that sufficient UV blockage doesn’t mean a higher price – many reasonably priced brands offer full UV protection.
-
Opt for larger sunglasses. When it comes to sunglasses, the bigger the better. When possible, choose sunglasses with wraparound frames and wide lenses.
-
Wear a large sun hat or visor. While shades are a great first UV barrier, a large hat will provide the extra protection you need to guard your eyes from UV.
-
Wear sunglasses on overcast days. Even on overcast days, UV rays are still able to peek through the clouds and harm your eyes. Don’t let the clouds deceive you.
-
Invest in a proper sunglasses case. Sunglasses can easily be scratched, broken or lost. It’s worthwhile to invest in a safe and protected case to minimize mishaps.
-
Stay hydrated. It’s important to keep your eyes hydrated. Consume a minimum of 2 liters of water each day to avoid dehydrated eyes and skin.
-
Stay inside during the heat of the day. Stay indoors when possible especially in the late morning and afternoon when the strength of the sun and ultraviolet radiation exposure are at a peak.
-
Consider purchasing polarized lenses. Since they reduce glare from reflective surfaces, polarized lenses are great for water-based activities and driving.
-
When participating in outdoor activities such as boating, watching fireworks or hiking, make sure you protect your eyes as necessary to avoid eye injuries.
-
Be careful not to apply sunblock too close to the eyes as it can enter the eye and cause irritation.
