Winter Is Here! Don't Leave Home Without Your Sunglasses
It's official! Winter is here, which means in some places bitter cold winds and freezing rains and sometimes snow are also on their way. You would never even conceive of leaving the house without a jacket in overcast climates; nevertheless unfortunately, many people leave their sunglasses behind. Although many of us don't think about the shining sunshine when we are venturing out to the bitter cold, the sun is still shining down during the winter months, and in many instances can be even more powerful.
They don't call it a "winter wonderland" for nothing. Especially after a blizzard, the world around takes on a glistening glimmer as a result of the sunlight reflecting off of the water molecules blanketing the ground and the trees. In fact, without sunglasses it can downright hurt your eyes when you first leave the house following a heavy snowfall. The UV sunlight that most of us are so vigilant in avoiding in the summertime may actually be more dangerous during the winter months since it reflects off the snow or ice, giving you a double dose of exposure. This is why a good pair of sunglasses is an essential part of your winter attire.
Although you want to feel great in your sunglasses, the most important part of deciding upon a pair of sunglasses is checking that they will properly protect your eyes. Be sure the lenses are 100% UV blocking by looking for confirmation that they block all light up to 400 nanometers - UV400. The good news is proper sun protection isn't necessarily expensive. Dozens of affordable brands are made with complete defense.
Another important factor in picking the right sun wear is the size of the lenses. You will have the most protection when your glasses are large enough to totally shield your eyes and the surrounding areas as well. The more coverage you have, the less harmful UV rays will be able to enter. Wrap around frames will also stop UV waves from entering through the periphery.
For those who enjoy snow or ice sports, it’s important to be aware that ultraviolet rays are stronger at peak heights, so it's wise to be particularly cautious to guard yourself on the hills. Another way to add extra protection is add on a protective hat with a wide brim or visor.
This winter, keep warm and stay protected! Don't forget to wear your shades.
