Eye Diseases Q & A

How are eye diseases diagnosed?

Vision Corner offers comprehensive eye exams, during which the team carefully evaluates every section of your eye in detail. The team uses state-of-the-art equipment, including Optovue OTC and optomap® to evaluate your eyes and check for disease.

Using optomap, the team checks your retinas (the back of your eye) without eye dilation. The team also performs an Optovue OCT scan that produces highly detailed 3D cross-sectional pictures of your retina, optic disc, and front part of your eye (anterior segment).

These advanced diagnostic tools allow the Vision Corner team to recognize and diagnose many common eye diseases before they cause symptoms or problems.

What are the most common eye diseases?

Some common eye diseases are:

Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when your inner eye pressure grows so high that it harms your optic nerve. That disrupts vision and could lead to blindness.

By diagnosing glaucoma early, your eye care specialists can help improve fluid drainage in your eye and reduce eye pressure to prevent vision loss.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

AMD affects the central vision. In its most common form (dry AMD), the disease causes central retinal deterioration due to age. In its more severe form (wet AMD), damage can also occur beneath the retina.

AMD can lead to complete central vision loss, but with early diagnosis, you can delay its progression.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy can affect people with diabetes. It occurs when retinal blood vessels weaken or swell. That causes blood leakage, fragile new blood vessel growth, and other complications. Untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness. But with early diagnosis, you can avoid it.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the eye lens becomes cloudy over time. They’re the most common reason for vision loss today.

Cataracts grow very slowly, so by diagnosing them before they cause vision problems, you can take steps to slow the progression and accommodate your changing vision.

The Vision Corner specialists are experts in all of these eye diseases, including the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.

How are eye diseases treated?

Eye disease treatment depends on the type of disease, how advanced it is, and your general health.

The Vision Corner team may recommend changes like a new eyewear prescription, using more light for reading, wearing quality sunglasses, and improved blood glucose control. You may need treatments like daily eye drops, and some eye diseases may require oral medication.

In some cases, you might need to adopt a “watchful waiting” approach in which you see the Vision Corner team for more frequent appointments. That allows the team to monitor changes and take fast action if your disease progresses suddenly.
